At DON-MED Africa, we believe that quality healthcare should never be determined by where someone lives or their financial circumstances. Every healthcare facility serving vulnerable communities deserves access to reliable medical equipment, technical expertise, and sustainable support.

On 7th May 2025, the DON-MED Africa team visited Urafiki Medical Camp as part of our ongoing mission to strengthen healthcare services across underserved communities. The visit brought together our representatives — Charles Kariuki, Antony Kagiri, and Lauren Kuria — for a day dedicated to partnership, assessment, and hope.

A Shared Vision for Better Healthcare

Nestled within the community it serves, Urafiki Medical Camp has become a lifeline for thousands of patients who would otherwise struggle to access basic healthcare services. Driven by a passionate team of healthcare professionals, the facility provides maternal healthcare, pediatric services, physiotherapy, dental care, eye care, and general outpatient treatment despite operating with limited resources.

The visit provided an opportunity for both organizations to exchange ideas, understand the clinic's operational challenges, and explore practical ways of improving healthcare delivery together.

Supporting Frontline Healthcare

As part of the outreach, DON-MED officially handed over essential medical equipment to strengthen the clinic's day-to-day operations. The donation included:

  • Stethoscopes
  • Infrared Thermometers
  • Pulse Oximeters
  • Mercurial Blood Pressure Machines
  • Basic Maternal and Pediatric Medical Supplies

These vital tools will enhance patient assessment, improve monitoring of critical vital signs, and support healthcare workers in delivering timely and accurate clinical care.

Listening Before Acting

Beyond the equipment donation, the team conducted a comprehensive tour of the facility, visiting consultation rooms, physiotherapy services, eye care units, dental facilities, and other clinical departments.

Through discussions with the leadership and healthcare staff, several priority challenges were identified, including:

  • Limited diagnostic equipment and essential hospital furniture
  • Inadequate biomedical engineering support for equipment maintenance
  • Shortage of healthcare professionals
  • Lack of emergency transport through an ambulance service
  • Financial limitations affecting sustainability projects such as farming initiatives, water filtration systems, and housing for vulnerable community members

The facility currently operates using solar power and borehole water — an inspiring example of resilience and innovation despite limited resources.

Building Long-Term Partnerships

The visit reinforced DON-MED's commitment to creating sustainable healthcare solutions beyond one-time donations.

Several exciting collaboration opportunities were identified, including:

  • Regular volunteer biomedical engineering visits for equipment servicing and preventive maintenance
  • Technical training and mentorship for healthcare workers
  • Specialist medical outreach through DON-MED's growing volunteer network
  • Future equipment support focused on diagnostics, emergency care, and inpatient services

Looking Ahead

Following the visit, DON-MED has proposed a phased support programme designed to strengthen the facility over time. Planned interventions include:

  • Comprehensive technical equipment audits
  • Biomedical engineering mentorship programmes
  • Volunteer radiographer and physiotherapist support
  • Future donations of priority medical equipment, including:
    • Portable Digital X-ray System
    • Oxygen Concentrators
    • ENT Diagnostic Equipment
    • Ear Examination Instruments
    • Gynecological Examination Bed
    • Ambulance for emergency patient transport
  • Regular follow-up visits to monitor progress and identify emerging healthcare needs

Making an Impact Together

Although the equipment donated represented only a small part of the clinic's broader needs, its immediate impact was evident. Healthcare workers expressed renewed motivation, patient assessment capabilities were strengthened, and a foundation for a lasting partnership was established.

At DON-MED Africa, we understand that sustainable healthcare transformation is achieved through collaboration, consistency, and compassion. Every partnership brings us one step closer to ensuring that underserved communities receive the quality healthcare they deserve.

Thank You

We extend our sincere appreciation to the leadership and staff of Urafiki Medical Camp for their warm welcome, openness, and unwavering commitment to serving their community.

Together, we are not simply donating equipment — we are building stronger healthcare systems, empowering frontline healthcare workers, and creating healthier communities across Africa.

Together, we bridge the healthcare gap across Africa.
